About

Survival Skills Day Camp – Wash Park gives campers a full week focused on survival skills such as navigation, animal tracking, tool making, fire building and safety, hiking, canoeing, and basic navigation skills. Campers explore the principles of Leave No Trace, observe and identify useful plants, track animals, identify scat, find food and medicine in the wild, and fashion utensils and shelter from gathered materials. They also practice flintknapping, paddling a canoe, water safety, learning how to read terrain to lead them to water, and how to purify the water they find.

Survival Skills Day Camp campers are grouped by grade range, with 2nd–4th graders and 5th–7th graders receiving customized instruction, and no previous survival or outdoor experience is required.

The program is taught by experienced instructors who are all 18 and older, with serious safety and skills training, and is led by founder David Secunda, former president of the Outdoor Industry Association and a 25-year veteran of the outdoor education industry. Avid4 Adventure states that every activity starts with a discussion about the risks involved, how to prevent them, and how to respond if something goes wrong. The organization is accredited by the American Camp Association, named among Colorado Parent’s Top 5 Sports Camps, and is a Certified B Corp committed to public transparency and accountability, and to paying educators a fair wage.

Avid4 Adventure operates under a Special Use authorization from the National Forest Service and is an Equal Opportunity Employer. The program is backed by the Avid4 Adventure Guarantee, which promises an authentic outdoor adventure, incredibly well-trained and professional staff, and increased confidence, and if these promises are not met, the next Avid4 Adventure camp is free. Families can access a Multi-Session/Sibling discount of $25 off per session after the first, a Referral Program that gives friends $50 off their first camp and provides a $50 coupon for a future 2026 camp when they enroll, and a Service Discount of $65 off for qualifying professions.

Parent testimonials describe children learning new outdoor skills such as stand up paddle board, kayaking, and biking, including learning to ride a bike without training wheels during camp, and note that staff are mature, responsible, and excited to share their passion with campers. Other parents report that their kids talk about camp long after it ends and that they were active every day and learning how to enjoy what Colorado has to offer.
