Camp Comfort is an award-winning bereavement camp offered each summer by Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice to address the special needs of grieving children ages 6 to 12. Founded in 1995, Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice’s bereavement camp has helped more than 2,100 grieving children ages 6 to 12. Campers are supervised by children’s bereavement professionals, clinical staff, and volunteers, all of whom are screened and undergo background checks. A behavioral specialist is available to provide specific behavior and emotional support to accommodate social and emotional needs of campers, grief specialists facilitate the grief workshops, and a camp nurse is available for first aid and to dispense medications. Camp Comfort uses a volunteer “buddy” system at weekend camps with no more than three children assigned to one adult.
Camp Comfort is directed by Ashley Collins. Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice’s first executive director was Carol Linke. Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice is Medicare and Medicaid certified for hospice and home health care and is licensed and certified by the Colorado Department of Health Facilities as a hospice and home health care provider. One parent, Aaron Simmons, said, “While I had them in therapy to talk about their emotions, we didn’t know anybody who had gone through something similar. So, a program like Camp Comfort was very compelling,” and also said, “We don’t have to be sad all the time, we can still live.” About Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice, Greg Moates of Black Hawk said, “When I thought I was losing everything, they showed me I wasn’t.” Celia Feinstein of Conifer said, “Having access to Mount Evans in our home is invaluable,” and Randy Jackson added, “Yeah, it’s invaluable,” and, “To me, Mount Evans means comfort. There are people that have no inkling that this exists or that it’s next door.” Joe and Cathy Wise of Morrison described Joe’s care team from Mount Evans Home Health Care & Hospice as “Helpful. Caring. Thoughtful. Thorough. Patient. Compassionate.”
