Junior Golf Summer Camp – Half Day Camp focuses on four specific parts of golf: hitting the ball in the air, hitting the ball at a target, curving the ball, and hitting the ball far. Campers also take part in competitive games using hockey sticks, soccer balls, and velcro 12 foot dart boards. The camp uses a curriculum developed over a 30 year period that blends teaching the fundamentals of the game with a game-based experience, with a student-teacher ratio of 5:1 and a high school or college aged counselor accompanying each group around the golf course to different stations where a senior coach provides instruction or runs games and competitions.

Each student finishes at noon each day and is prepared for pickup no later than 12:05pm. A high school or college aged counselor in each group is responsible for safety and enjoyment. Rental clubs can be purchased for an additional $25, and The Golf Practice is a proud partner of U.S. Kids Golf.

In 2025, Chris Oehlerking was named the Illinois PGA Teacher of the Year and honored by Golf Digest as one of the publication’s “Best Teachers in State,” and he was selected by Golf Magazine to their “Teachers to Watch” list for 2024–2025.

The mission also emphasizes innovative instruction that encourages players to explore unique approaches, develop a personal style suited to their strengths, and understand the “why” behind each aspect of the game to cultivate ownership and confidence on the course. The Golf Practice’s history includes Founder Peter Donahue creating GreenToTee Golf Academy in 1989, meeting Chris Oehlerking in 2011, hiring Alex Prior in 2018, and starting at Canal Shores in 2014 with 5 kids in a fall beginner clinic.
