Music Makers of Western Springs was founded in 1978 and is a family owned music school owned and operated by Jeremy and Gwen Michor. The school has over 30 teachers on staff with university training from some of the most prestigious colleges in the country and years of professional teaching and performing experience, and strings teachers are classically trained and use a combination of Suzuki, Sassmanshaus, and other traditional methods. The program states that it strives to provide exceptional music education to each student, believes music education should be a positive, inclusive, and engaging experience that instills a lifelong love and passion for learning and performing music, and is committed to providing high-quality music education in a challenging yet comfortable learning environment.
The musical theatre program is a no-cut program (MMT is a no-cut program) where all students are cast in a role, perform in multiple scenes and songs, and there is no precasting for any role, with casting not based on past roles or participation and based on many factors including audition and callbacks for that specific show. Each theatre program imitates the process of professional theatre and culminates in a full tech week of dress rehearsals and fully-staged live performances with professional set design, costuming, lighting, and sound, and students work on lines, singing, and choreography regardless of experience or skill level, with no experience in acting, singing, or dancing required. Tuition for the theatre program is all-inclusive and includes weekly classes, primary costumes, a libretto book/script, an MMT tote bag, a show t-shirt, and access to all digital production photos from a professional photographer.
Music Makers of Western Springs is a full-service music school with a brand new, modern school building and teaching facilities, a spacious and parent-friendly waiting area with comfortable chairs, free WiFi, filtered water, and coffee/tea/hot chocolate service, and teaching studios with observation windows. Parents are welcome to sit in on their child's lesson any time, and observation windows in teaching studios allow parents to watch lessons. All lessons are taken month to month with no semester or quarterly minimums, lessons are available seven days a week, multiple family members can take lessons on different instruments on the same day at the same location, and trial lessons are available with no enrollment fee until commitment.
The school has professional office staff available to assist, with dedicated office staff members available five days a week, and office hours listed as Monday through Saturday by phone and Sunday office closed, with a note that office hours do not necessarily reflect lesson or class times. The program offers instrument rentals for keyboards and guitars at $25.00 per month. Student recitals are free of charge to friends and family, and performances are described as an excellent choice for all ages to attend.
Music Makers of Western Springs has an award winning musical theater program and is a partner school with FHSR through the Music To My Ears scholarship program, which provides a year of tuition-free music instruction for deaf and hard of hearing children. The school serves the communities of Western Springs, La Grange, La Grange Park, Hinsdale, Burr Ridge, Indian Head Park, and other western suburbs of Chicago. Families can opt in to SMS/MMS communication for reminders and information, with the ability to opt out by texting STOP.
