About

IU Indiana Kids offers tutoring, mentoring, college and career readiness activities, and family workshops for students in grades 6–12. The program also provides professional development for tutors and mentors. Tutoring sessions run for one hour and have been offered through face-to-face instruction, on Zoom, or by phone, with students connecting by computer, tablet, phone through Zoom, or by telephone if they do not have internet access.

• Ages: 11–18 years old
• Schedule: Services are offered on weeknights with one-hour tutoring sessions
• Price: Indiana Kids provides free tutoring and mentoring for students in grades 6-12.

All sessions are monitored, and tutors receive direct supervision from staff. The program serves over 2,600 kids in grades 6–12 statewide and receives feedback from school and community partners. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the program adapted to fully online operations, with students placed into a Zoom breakout room with their tutor or mentor.

Program manager Kayla Nunnally notes that equity of opportunity is a key focus because not all students have equitable access to the internet or a phone that can be used to call in for sessions. She also reports that, as statewide programming relaunched, the program received positive feedback from school and community partners and from IU Indiana Kids participants about their excitement to resume sessions or try them for the first time.
