Columbus Recreation and Parks Department, which runs Youth Basketball Leagues, was formed when the City Recreation Department (established July 15, 1910) merged with the Division of Forestry and Parks on Jan. 2, 1972. The department’s mission is to connect the people of the community through the power of nature, wellness and creativity. It has more than 400 parks on over 13,500 acres, along with 28 community centers, five athletic complexes, six golf courses, 230 miles of regional trails, six spraygrounds and interactive fountains, eight outdoor pools and an indoor aquatics center, 25 nature preserves, three reservoirs, five dog parks, and a skate park. The department offers programs for toddlers through seniors, including Late Night Basketball, which is offered in partnership with the Columbus Divisions of Police and Fire, and a wheelchair basketball program.
