About

PLAY (Personalized Learning Adventures for Youth) offers enrichment and tutoring services for all subjects in small learning groups. Lesson plans and activities are tailored to each student’s personal interests, strengths, and desired area of growth, with a focus on imagination, building, designing, and inventing. Students work with other learners to solve problems, come up with new ideas, acquire new knowledge and skills, and use arts and crafts or music to express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings.

• Ages: preschool–middle school

PLAY provides enrichment and tutoring services for all subjects to children in the Brookings and surrounding areas in small learning groups. Tutors guide students to use their minds, the resources at PLAY, and collaboration with other learners in explorations, and students often take the lead to solve the problems in front of them. The program emphasizes collaboration, recognizing each child’s strengths in their group, setting goals, and encouraging students as they work to reach them, while viewing failures as learning opportunities and mistakes as proof of trying, and acknowledging that growth and success are not linear.

The program is led by Miss Cassie (also referred to as Ms. Cassie). PLAY states that it strives to encourage, engage, and excite children about learning, aims to instill confidence and curiosity, and encourages students to value themselves as lifelong learners.

One parent, Megan Nelson, states that having the services that PLAY offers in the community is an asset, that having both of her children attend is a weekly priority, and that it gives them an additional opportunity to expand their minds, explore different ways to learn and problem solve, and meet other learners their age, and she describes Miss Cassie as putting joy into learning. Another parent, Jess Murano, reports that all four of her children have attended PLAY, that her youngest son who despises school is learning things at a faster rate working with Ms. Cassie than during the school year and remembers what he learns, and that all four children love Ms. Cassie and show this in their faces when they leave her classes.
