North County Mavericks High School Development Program offers baseball instruction through hitting lessons, pitching lessons, fielding lessons, and program wide clinics. The program is year round and includes participation in REC Ball as part of its activities.
• Ages: 8–13 years old
Established in 2009, the program operates under the leadership of founder Jose Balderas, who is also a coach at La Costa Canyon High School. The coaching staff and network consist of current high school coaches from across San Diego County, current collegiate coaches, and former MLB and collegiate players and coaches. The mission of the high school development program is to provide a long-term developmental baseball program for 3rd through 8th graders, leading and teaching players to be their best on and off the field, encouraging them to be leaders, good role models, and gentlemen, and emphasizing that grades are the priority alongside hard work in baseball and school. Unique features include high level baseball instruction, mental skills training focused on elite habits, a year round structure that transitions players through 3rd to 8th grade teams, encouragement of participation in REC Ball and other positive learning environments, and using baseball to teach life lessons and how to overcome everyday challenges. The program is independent of any and all high schools and is described as a high school and college development baseball program, with NC Mavs coaches offering hitting and pitching lessons and program wide clinics.
Documented outcomes for participants include more than 300 high school players, over 50 college commits to schools such as USD, Vanderbilt, UCLA, UCSD, Point Loma, Tufts, Occidental, Cal Lutheran, and Sonoma State, and 2 MLB draft picks (Tigers and Braves).
