About

Iron Dragon Kosho Shorei Martial Arts Institute offers training in Kenpo Karate, Northern and Southern Gung Fu, Kosho Shorei, Tai Chi, and meditation. Students practice sparring and practical self-defense techniques, along with body hardening through San Chin, makiwara training, iron palm training, and wing chun dummy training. The program also includes the Iron Dragon Kenpo Cane Senjutsu System, Cane-Fu training for seniors or those with physical limitations or concerns, Kids Safe/Safety Seminars for kids, Kubotan self-defense classes, defensive tactics, firearms, and other martial arts training.

Iron Dragon Kosho Shorei Martial Arts Institute was established in 1992 by Grand Master Arquilla, who still teaches, continues his personal study, and trains several hours a day six days per week. All training is under Grand Master Arquilla’s personal supervision, and students still learn from the original Tracy Chinese Kenpo manuals of the late 1960s, along with additional material from Kosho Shorei, Japanese and Korean hard styles, Northern and Southern Gung Fu, and Tai Chi. The school is described as among the most traditional in the area, with protocol described as very important, and everything is merit-based with no set timeline for progression or belt promotions. Training at Iron Dragon is described as arduous and long, and students are expected to learn all aspects of martial arts listed, with Tai Chi and meditation included for health and to strengthen the mind.

Grand Master Arquilla is the founder and teacher, and Master Stan Toscano is the owner and operator of the Iron Dragon Tactical School of Self Defense and has been an active student of Grand Master Ray Arquilla for over thirty years. For over eight years, Stan Toscano worked under the direct supervision of Grand Master Ray Arquilla developing the Iron Dragon Kenpo Cane Senjutsu System, and he received his Shodan Rank from Grand Master Shuey, founder of American Cane/Cane Masters. He retired from law enforcement after thirty years, has a lifetime teaching credential from the State of California, and was the Chief Weapons Impact Instructor and Master Trainer for the firearms program for the State of California. He is a POST Certified Law Enforcement Instructor providing defensive tactics and firearms at a police academy, is contracted with charter and public schools providing physical education, serves as a Boy Scouts of America Personal Fitness Counselor, and is contracted by the County of Sacramento to provide Violence in the Workplace classes.
