About

The Indiana University Jim Holland Summer Science Programs include hands-on research experiences, hands-on laboratory experiences, lectures, lab sessions, and field trips. The programs are organized into three levels: the 1st year Jim Holland Summer Enrichment Program in Biology (SEP), the 2nd year Jim Holland Summer Science Research Program (SSRP), and the 3rd year Jim Holland Research Initiative in STEM Education (RISE). Only students residing in the United States are eligible to apply, and the programs focus on students currently in grades 8–11 who will be entering grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 in the fall.

• Ages: 13–17 years old

The Indiana University Jim Holland Summer Science Programs are specifically designed to expand participation and retention in STEM disciplines by providing opportunities for academically high-achieving students. The stated goals are to foster and sustain prolonged interest and enthusiasm in the sciences, to provide positive, diverse, hands-on exposures to research, and to help students develop an awareness of career opportunities. The mission also states that, by offering hands-on research experiences, mentorship from faculty, and a welcoming, supportive environment, the programs aim to increase participation in STEM and contribute to the next generation of scientists and innovators.

The leadership team includes Armin Moczek, an Indiana University professor of biology and department chair, and Kody Beaver as the contact for the Holland Summer Science Programs. Teachers and counselors are involved in the programs; teachers and counselors must arrive one day prior to the program for training. Teachers receive a stipend and free room and board at an IU residence hall. Counselors provide supervision, ensure students’ safety and well-being, enforce program rules, and encourage and support participants’ academic interests.

The application process requires recommendation forms from both a math and a science teacher, a form from the school counselor, and acknowledgement from a parent or guardian. Applications for the 2026 Holland Summer Science Programs are closed. A testimonial from the program states that they have a 100% success rate at converting program participants into college students and that there is no limit to where participants could go in the sciences if they choose.

The Holland Summer Science Programs are made possible by the IU College of Arts & Sciences, the IU Bloomington Department of Biology, and Cook Incorporated of Bloomington, Indiana.
